Role overview

Safety & Environmental Officer

Salary: £53,000 to £62,500 plus up to 6% bonus, overtime & company car

Location: Ambergate

This role involves travelling to and working from our Ambergate site approx. 3 days a week and will involve some travel to other sites across the UK as required.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor daily site activities, conduct inspections, and audit, assessing risks for high-hazard operations such as excavation, confined space entry, and hot works.
  • Support incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental permits and legislation (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Clean Air Act).
  • Monitor emissions, noise, vibration, and water quality, and oversee pollution prevention measures.
  • Conduct joint safety and environmental risk assessments.
  • Support emergency response planning for incidents involving hazardous materials or environmental harm.
  • Promote responsible waste practices, monitor material usage, and ensure compliance with hazardous waste regulations and the waste hierarchy.
  • Support ecological surveys, monitor construction near sensitive habitats, and promote biodiversity enhancement initiatives.
  • Deliver inductions, toolbox talks, and awareness campaigns.
  • Foster a proactive culture of safety and environmental responsibility across all site personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records, contribute to HSE performance reporting, and support the implementation of best practices and improvement initiatives.
About you

You’ll be a conscientious and proactive HSE professional with a strong foundation in both safety and environmental management. You'll be passionate about protecting people and the planet and thrive in dynamic construction environments. You'll also be confident in engaging with site teams, contractors, and regulators, bringing a collaborative approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Key requirements & experience
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations (CDM, PUWER, LOLER) and environmental legislation
  • Experience conducting site inspections, audits, and incident investigations
  • Skilled in risk assessments, emergency planning, and ISO 45001/14001 systems
  • Familiarity with pollution control, waste management, and biodiversity protection - desirable
  • Previous experience in a safety/environmental role within gas utilities or infrastructure construction - desirable
  • Effective communicator with experience delivering training and engaging stakeholders - desirable
  • NEBOSH General and Environmental Certificates - desirable
  • ISO 14001 auditor trained - desirable
  • NVQ Level 3 or 5 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice - desirable
  • Full UK car driving licence

Security clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
