Job summary

LHH is recruiting a Lead / Principal System Safety Engineer for a defence aerospace technology programme in Southampton, with ~90% onsite work and SC clearance requirements. You will lead safety activities across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring subsystem, integrated system and aircraft-level safety assessments are aligned.

Key responsibilities include delivering safety analyses, advising engineering teams, and ensuring compliance with the Safety Management Plan while promoting a strong safety

Qualifications

• Experience delivering system safety activities across multiple engineering domains.
• Experience with ALARP and safety case development.
• Ability to lead cross-functional teams and present at design reviews.
• Knowledge of ARP4754B, ARP4761A, RTCA DO-254 or DO-178C is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of system safety assessments and documentation.
• Provide safety advice to engineering and design authority teams.
• Ensure safety activities follow the Safety Management Plan.
• Identify and mitigate system hazards to ALARP.

Hours: 37 hours per week

IR35 status: Inside IR35

Security requirements: Sole UK nationality and eligibility for SC clearance. Candidates may be able to start on BPSS while SC clearance is progressed.

We are recruiting a Lead / Principal System Safety Engineer to support a major defence aerospace technology programme, integrating advanced sensing, communications and electronic systems onto a flight test aircraft.

You will lead system safety activities across multidisciplinary engineering teams, ensuring that subsystem, integrated system and aircraft-level safety assessments align.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of system safety assessments and supporting documentation.
• Provide specialist safety advice to the engineering and design authority teams.
• Ensure safety activities follow the programme’s Safety Management Plan.
• Identify and assess system hazards, defining mitigations to reduce risks to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).
• Define safety requirements and allocate them to the appropriate subsystems and engineering teams.
• Review subsystem safety analyses and incorporate findings into the overall system assessment.
• Ensure alignment between system and aircraft-level safety analyses.
• Identify and communicate safety dependencies across teams and systems.
• Present safety assessment findings at design reviews.
• Safety analysis of complex systems within a safety-critical industry.
• Experience across multiple phases of the engineering lifecycle.
• Leading and delivering safety work packages across multiple teams.
• Understanding of aircraft-level safety regulations and analysis.
• Ability to assess complex system interactions and dependencies.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• A commitment to promoting and improving safety culture.
• Knowledge of ARP4754B, ARP4761A, RTCA DO-254 or DO-178C.
• Experience working with complex designs and technical uncertainty.
• Knowledge of lasers, radar, sensors or defensive aids systems.
• Awareness of information security.
