Overview
As a Safety Engineer, you will be identifying and analysing potential hazards and risks with the design and operation of military vehicles, then supporting the systems, trials, design, and sub-system teams to ensure those risks are minimised. This is a varied and demanding role, requiring close liaison between Engineering teams and suppliers.
Responsibilities
- To support the Project Safety, Environmental and Legislative (SEL) Lead in the successful delivery of the Safety Programme to quality, cost and schedule
- To be responsible for ensuring the safety of equipment integrated onto, interfacing with, stowed on, or carried on the Challenger 3 vehicle, including WOME
- Maintain and operate in accordance with a Safety, Environmental and Legislative management plan
- Interact with suppliers and suppliers' safety information: to ensure receipt of complete and credible subsystem safety and environmental cases; analyse appropriately for inclusion within the vehicle-level safety case
- Determine the appropriate approaches to be undertaken to ensure safety of equipment
- Establish safety targets with decomposition into sub system targets and requirements
- To facilitate and chair Hazard Identification and Hazard Analysis meetings on behalf of customer and project
- Undertake safety analysis utilising a variety of techniques such as Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- Provide guidance to engineering and other functional departments in relation to their Safety, Environmental and Legislative requirements
- Generate and maintain a robust Hazard Log
- Provide support to assurance that the design is adequate, i.e. robust and underpinned by supporting evidence for the safety case
- Generate coherent safety justifications and Safety Case Reports on behalf of customers and projects
- Competently and confidently interact with Suppliers, Customer and User at all levels
- Significant drive and energy, strong engineering skills, and the ability to deliver a diverse programme to demanding time, target cost and quality requirements
- The candidate must be a team player who is prepared to work with a multi-site engineering team within RBSL and the customer community
- The individual will be required to work across geographical and cultural divides to draw together a comprehensive engineering capability that will derive balanced system solutions
- Experience with Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (WOME) within the defence environment
- Experience of engineering within the defence environment
- Experience with the design and/or operation of armoured fighting vehicles (desirable)
- A willingness to examine and investigate issues
- A desire to ensure that equipment is safe
- Completing and overseeing the production and presentation of reports
- Ability to effectively manage conflicting priorities and deadlines
- Able to work under pressure and be able to schedule, coordinate and maintain efficiency
- Credible presentation skills
Qualifications
- The following are desirable:
- Experience of safety engineering within a vehicle and/or defence environment
- Engineering degree
- ONC/HNC or equivalent experience in Engineering
- Working knowledge of MOD Safety & Environmental Management Systems
- Understanding of MoD safety management activities and processes, e.g. DSA01.1, DSA02.DLSR, DEF STAN 00-051, 00-055, 00-056 and the ALARP process
- A good working knowledge of hazard management tools
- Experience of carrying out safety analyses
- Knowledge or experience of one of the following would be beneficial:
- Functional Safety (IEC 61508)
- Accident analysis
- Supplier safety management
