Outreach & Engagement Caseworker

Plymouth

Full-time, permanent 37 hours per week

The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust is a Royal Navy & Royal Marine charity that gives help, in cases of need, to serving and former Royal Naval ratings and Royal Marine (other ranks). We also help their partners, children and some others connected with them. The RNBT has a ‘family-run’ feel and we have carefully created a supportive, friendly and close-knit team making it a unique and very special place to work.

The role

We are now recruiting for a Plymouth based Caseworker to join our team. Whilst this role is largely home based, regular liaison with the local community in Plymouth and surroundings areas including Cornwall, is essential so this role will require the post holder to be based within a reasonable distance of this location.

Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Deal with enquiries and correspondence from beneficiaries.
  • Liaise with external caseworkers from RN FPS, SSAFA, TRBL and other organisations to ensure comprehensive casework is carried out on all beneficiaries.
  • Establish a relationship of trust with beneficiaries. Offer advice and guidance including relationship, bereavement, family counselling and sign-posting where appropriate, both by telephone and in person when appropriate.
  • Carry out home visits with beneficiaries as required – the role will involve regular travel throughout your geographical area.
  • Investigate beneficiary entitlement to statutory funds, advise of other possible sources of charitable funding and with the beneficiaries’ consent, refer to other charities to almonise with them to provide a holistic approach of support for the beneficiary.
  • Keep thorough, confidential and systematic records of all matters concerning enquiries, applications, and grant awards in line with the GDPR Policy.
  • Prepare and present information and statistics for the Head of Grants & Wellbeing for presentation to the Operational Delivery Committee and Central Committee.
  • Be prepared to deliver or support the Head Office staff during presentations about the Trust to interested parties and organisations. Seek opportunities to encourage other organisations to work proactively with beneficiaries.
  • Keep abreast of developments on legislation, the benefits system and have an awareness of the MoD allowance system.

About you

This role would suit an empathetic, highly organised individual, preferably who has experience in a Caseworker or similar role. The post is fast-paced and varied so an ability to manage changing priorities and be responsive is essential. This role reports to a remote manager and team based in Portsmouth so many of your day to day interactions will be via telephone and MS teams.

A naval, armed forces or non-profit background would be beneficial but is not essential. Our team have built their experiences across a wide range of sectors and we strive to be as inclusive as possible to encourage diversity across our teams.

Candidates will have access to their own vehicle and a full UK driving license.

Any offer of employment will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

What we offer

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer a generous suite of benefits to our employees including;

  • Paid mileage
  • 29 days holiday (inclusive of Christmas shut-down period) plus public holidays
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Eligible for blue light card
