Job description

Royal Mint Advisory Committee - Four Non-executive Committee Members

Employer: The Royal Mint Advisory Committee

Location: London (Greater)

Salary: Voluntary Position

Closing date: 23 Apr 2025

Contract: Voluntary

Hours: Part time

Sector: Arts & heritage, Charities, Artistic specialism, Gallery & art centre, Cause, Trustee, Visual arts, Arts & culture

Employee benefits & values: Hybrid working

The Committee plays a central role in recommending designs for United Kingdom coins, official medals, seals, and decorations. Four non-executive member positions are available. The purpose of a non-executive member is to play an active part in raising the standard of numismatic art in the UK, through judging artwork submitted, offering constructive comments on how it can be amended, suggesting suitable means of briefing artists, and suggesting new artists to become involved in the design of coins and medals.

The Committee is currently looking to appoint four members. Depending on the candidate’s set of skills, a successful candidate will be appointed as a Generalist Member, an Artist, an Art Historian, or a Lettering Expert.

In selecting appropriate designs for coins and medals to commemorate royal, state, and historic events, the nature of the role is necessarily national in its coverage, requiring a breadth of view and a clear sense of what constitutes good design.

The member will be expected to attend meetings of the Committee where, upon reaching consensus, design proposals will be forwarded for approval to the Government department concerned before being passed on to the Palace for royal approval.

The essential skills required for this appointment are:

  1. A strong awareness of the visual arts, jewellery, and fashion, as well as of historical or cultural trends and a highly developed aesthetic sense.
  2. Some knowledge of artists and designers, across a range of disciplines, currently working in Britain.
  3. The stature to contribute constructively to discussions, articulate views clearly, and persuade others of your viewpoint to influence the outcome of meetings.
  4. Experience of group decision making, demonstrating the ability to work collaboratively and constructively with others to reach a consensus on difficult choices involving artistic taste and suitability.
  5. Ability to understand the commercial, political, and artistic implications of decisions taken with respect to official medals, seals, and decorations.

Desirable specialist skills for this appointment are:

  1. Senior leadership experience with the ability to exercise judgments to achieve outcomes at a senior level. (for Generalist Members)
  2. A lettering artist and/or calligrapher occupying a senior position through the reputation of their work. They should have an excellent awareness of a range of letterforms and their practical application across a range of media. (for Lettering Experts)
  3. A historian of British history occupying a senior position through their reputation, their publication record, or role within an academic institution. (for Art Historians)
  4. An artist occupying a senior position through the reputation of their work, their membership of a national organisation promoting British art, or their contribution to British art. (for Artists)

Time Commitments

Members are appointed for a five-year term, with the option of extending that term for a further five years. Members are expected to commit to attending six RMAC meetings per year. Under normal circumstances, the Committee meets in London. Some meetings can be held virtually or in a hybrid manner. Each of these meetings occurs over a morning or afternoon. In between meetings, light level contact is expected. All travel and accommodation expenses will be paid.

The membership of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee does not receive remuneration.
