Job summary

National Oceanography Centre Southampton is seeking an ROV Mechanical/Systems Engineer within the MARS group. You will operate the Isis ROV and other deep-towed equipment, providing engineering and operational support from base and at sea.

You will contribute to maintaining, servicing and upgrading systems, enabling high‑quality ocean data collection for marine science and UK/international collaborations. The role supports a hybrid working pattern with extensive sea deployments.

Qualifications

• HNC/HND or higher in a directly relevant engineering discipline or degree level.
• Broad engineering knowledge across mechanics, electronics and software.
• Experience in ROVs/ROTVs or marine engineering preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support operations of the MARS fleet, including vehicle prep, maintenance, calibration, and deployments.
• Develop vehicles, integrate sensors, troubleshoot and improve performance.
• Collaborate with MARS development team on vehicle development.
• Improve ROV operations and procedures for efficiency, safety and consistency.
• Work with commissioning scientists to design ROV operations addressing science questions.
• Engage with UK/international users and institutes to maintain relationships.
