Job summary

National Oceanography Centre in Southampton is seeking a Permanent ROV Mechanical / Systems Engineer to join the MARS group. You’ll operate our ROV and towed systems, maintain equipment, and collaborate with multiple teams to deliver high‑quality ocean data.

The role requires qualifications in engineering (HNC/HND or higher) or equivalent ROV experience, strong problem‑solving, and the ability to work up to 90 days at sea each year.

Qualifications

  • Be qualified to HNC/HND or higher in a directly relevant engineering discipline, degree level or higher in a related discipline, or have relevant experience in ROVs/ROTVs.
  • Broad engineering knowledge with basic understanding of physics, mechanical engineering, electronics, electrical systems, and software development.
  • Ability to understand technical challenges and provide well-considered technical solutions.
  • Experience in marine engineering area (preferably with ROVs) or closely related discipline.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Work effectively in multidisciplinary teams with interpersonal skills and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Plan and manage work independently with direction, in ashore and at sea environments.
  • Self-motivated, flexible and innovative with ability to resolve issues at sea and deliver high-quality work at base.
  • Prepared to work up to 90 days at sea each year.
  • Working knowledge of ROVs or towed underwater systems is highly desirable.
  • Experience in engineering design and development, and conducting trials or operations of complex electromechanical systems is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support for operations involving the MARS fleet including vehicle preparation, maintenance, calibration, mobilisation, and deployments.
  • Pilot, navigate, and control the ROV and other deep towed equipment.
  • Carry out vehicle development, integrating new sensors, troubleshooting and improving performance.
  • Work with the development team to assist with vehicle development.
  • Drive continuous improvement of ROV operations by refining procedures, improving efficiency, safety, and performance.
  • Collaborate with commissioning scientists to design ROV operations addressing science questions.
  • Contribute to internal and external relationships with UK and international users, institutes and organisations.
