An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated pharmacist to join our Pharmacy team as a Specialist Rotational Clinical Pharmacist (Band 7) at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust. In this role, you will provide patient-centred pharmaceutical care across a range of clinical specialities, helping to ensure safe, effective, and optimal use of medicines. As an acute trust we are able to offer a unique and friendly training experience with greater exposure to both the operational and clinical aspects of hospital pharmacy.

We welcome pharmacists looking to move from General Practice or Community Pharmacy.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Rotational Clinical Pharmacist, you will:

  • Deliver clinical pharmacy services to allocated wards/departments on a rotational basis.
  • Perform medicines reconciliation, clinical screening, medication reviews, discharge planning, and patient counselling.
  • Ensure safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of medicines, adhering to Trust policies and national guidance.
  • Proactively advise prescribers on optimising treatment, including challenging inappropriate prescriptions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to promote medicines optimisation and patient safety within your speciality
  • Rotate through a range of specialities, contributing to service improvements, audits, and governance activities.
  • Supervise and mentor junior pharmacists and trainees; contribute to teaching and education.
  • Participate in service continuity and quality improvement activities in the form of QI projects and clinical audits.
  • Engage in CPD and personal development plans to support continuous improvement and professional growth

One of the highlights of this role is the variety of clinical rotations on offer. You will gain experience across, a broad range of specialities, which may include: Critical care,Oncology and Haematology, Acute Medicine, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Respiratory, General & Emergency Surgery, Care of the Elderly and Gastroenterology.

Job responsibilities
  • To assist the other pharmacists in ensuring that the work carried out in the department is performed in accordance with the recommendations contained in the guide to good pharmaceutical manufacturing practice and its supplements, COSHH and the safe systems of work documentation.
  • To assist in the distribution of medicines to patients, wards, and departments and to assist in maintaining systems for the control of drugs in accordance with current legislation.
  • Support diploma students and trainee pharmacists when undertaking study and application to practice.
  • To support trainee pharmacists and qualified pharmacists undergoing Prescribing qualification as Designated Prescribing Practitioner when required.
  • To assist the medical staff in the undertaking of such clinical trials as has been approved by the research and ethics committee and to arrange under the direction of senior members of staff of the pharmaceutical department, the necessary supplies and aspects of trial protocol affecting the pharmaceutical services.
  • To monitor and report medicines related causes of admission and ensure corrective measures are taken to prevent re-occurrences.
  • To undertake out of hours emergency duty commitments as rostered.
  • To provide professional and legal clinical supervision in the dispensary so as to ensure compliance with statutory and ethical standards when rostered in the area.

The post holder will be expected to take part in weekend, bank holiday, late night and emergency duty rota.

Experience and Knowledge
  • Broad clinical and pharmaceutical knowledge gained in hospital environment, relating to promotion of high quality, effective and cost- effective use of medicines or experience in specialist fiel
  • At least six months hospital experience
  • Committing to continuing professional development and education
  • Experience of project and audit management
  • Experience of advising patients with complex pharmaceutical needs or non-compliance with medication
Qualification and Professional Training
  • Vocational Master's Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • 1 year pre-registration training and experience
  • Job related post-graduate qualification, e.g. post-graduate clinical pharmacy certificate/diploma, or equivalent vocational experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work alone & within a team
  • High degree of self-motivation to organise and implement change and to develop ideas into practice
