Rotational Senior Physiotherapist

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Physiotherapist to join our team of AHPs at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The successful candidate will commence rotation within the MSK Outpatient service at Ormskirk District General Hospital.

As a Senior Physiotherapist, you will rotate across hospital sites at Southport District General Hospital and Ormskirk District General Hospital, with potential opportunities across other sites within the Mersey West Lancs NHS Trust.

This position offers a broad spectrum of rotations and learning opportunities to consolidate skills, including:

  • Discharge to Assess Therapy led unit
  • North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre
  • Stroke
  • Elective Orthopaedics
  • Trauma and Orthopaedics
  • MSK
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation

The successful candidate can expect structured supervision, support, and opportunities for further training and education.

Main duties of the job
  • Assess and treat patients in ward or community settings.
  • Assist Clinical Therapy Manager/Team Leader in service development and quality service provision.
  • Supervise junior staff and delegate duties appropriately, providing support.
  • Meet the objectives of Therapy and Community and Continued Care Services.
  • Cover for absences within the Community and Departments of Southport & Ormskirk Hospital Trust.
  • Participate in the On Call Respiratory Rota if applicable.

Job responsibilities

KEY DUTIES

  • Assess and diagnose referred patients, plan and implement treatment respecting patient dignity and privacy.
  • Participate in extended working rotas as needed.
  • Implement and evaluate therapy interventions based on best practices.
  • Record and report findings following departmental procedures.
  • Share skills and knowledge with colleagues and patients/carers.
  • Coordinate with hospital and community staff to ensure seamless patient care and support discharge planning.
  • Communicate complex information empathetically, using motivational interviewing and counselling when needed.
  • Be part of the Respiratory on Call rota if applicable.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide education to therapy students and support professional development of colleagues.
  • Engage in professional practice, research, and continuous professional development.
  • Maintain up-to-date Personal Development Plans and portfolios.
  • Comply with HPC standards, research governance, infection control, and all relevant policies.
  • Report equipment issues and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Operate within health and safety regulations, and report hazards.
  • Contribute to service development and clinical governance activities.
  • Supervise junior staff and develop leadership skills.
  • Manage own health and wellbeing, adhering to Trust values.

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify service demand changes and report to senior staff.
  • Assist in resource management.
  • Manage daily departmental operations in the absence of senior staff.
  • Participate in Trust and departmental briefings.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Relevant post-graduate CPD
Knowledge & Experience
  • Membership or participation in Special Interest Groups (if applicable)
Skills
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and team working skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and within MDT
  • Knowledge of NHS issues, Clinical Governance, and therapy practices
