Job summary

NHS Jobs is seeking an Occupational Therapist to assess and treat patients across hospital and community settings. You will address quality of life, physical and cognitive needs, and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to implement treatment plans.

You will prioritise clinical factors, communicate clearly with patients and carers, and contribute to education, research, and quality improvement within the department.

Responsibilities

• Assess and treat patients, addressing quality of life and physical, cognitive, affective, social and environmental issues in hospital and community settings.
• Prioritise factors in the client’s condition using clinical reasoning, considering progress and related health issues.
• Communicate clearly with clients and carers; provide education and recommendations in an accessible form.
• Produce written, electronic and verbal reports for the MDT and other health or social care providers.
• Develop skills and knowledge; support education and training of other professionals and visitors to the department.
• Maintain accurate patient care records and delegate work to staff and students to support caseloads.
• Participate in evaluation of clinical practice and keep up to date with rehabilitation research and practice.

Job description

Main Duties CLINICAL

• To assess and treat patients, addressing quality of life, physical, cognitive, affective, social and environmental issues either on an individual or a group basis, utilising a range of therapeutic skills in accordance with devised treatment plans, in both hospital and in the community settings.
• To prioritise factors involved in the Clients presenting condition through clinical reasoning based on skills, knowledge, experience and on current professional opinion, Clients progress and other physical, social, emotional and mental health issues.

COMMUNICATION

• To use well developed verbal and non-verbal communication skills to ensure that the Client and/or their carer understands the relevant advise, education and recommendations given.
• To communicate sensitive information in an understandable form to patients and their carers and to enable patients to participate and co-operate in treatment.
• To produce written, electronic and verbal reports for the MDT other Health or Social care providers and be able to convey this to the patient in an accessible and meaningful manner using the correct terminology, often in the face of communication barriers.

EDUCATION / PROFESSIONAL

• To utilise opportunities to develop skills and knowledge, apply critical appraisal and keep up to date with current practise in the field.
• To support other Occupational Therapists in the education and training of other professionals and visitors to the department.
• To participate in education programmes for Client/ service groups.

MANAGEMENT

• To ensure that accurate and evaluative records of patient care are maintained in line with the service policy.
• To delegate appropriate work to staff in supporting roles and provide informal day-to-day support to Rehabilitation Assistants and students to enable them to carry or assist with a managed caseload.

RESEARCH

• To participate in the evaluation of clinical practise.
• To keep up to date in the development of research and clinical practice in the field of rehabilitation, older people and related areas.
