We're recruiting for an experienced Rolling Stock Engineer to join a growing engineering business delivering specialist projects across the UK rail industry.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong rolling stock background who enjoys combining practical, hands‑on engineering with project delivery and technical leadership. The role would particularly suit an experienced Rolling Stock Engineer, Production Manager, Shift Manager, Depot Engineer, Fleet Engineer or Vehicle Modification Engineer looking to broaden their experience into project delivery and customer‑facing engineering.
You'll be responsible for leading vehicle modification activities, supporting installation projects, coordinating site teams and ensuring work is delivered safely, on time and to the highest quality standards.
The role offers a varied mix of workshop, depot and customer site activities, making it ideal for someone who enjoys being involved from planning through to final delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate rolling stock modification and installation projects.
- Plan and supervise on‑site engineering activities across UK customer locations.
- Produce technical documentation including Risk Assessments, Method Statements and installation procedures.
- Carry out fault finding, testing, commissioning and equipment replacement activities.
- Support manufacture and assembly of electrical and mechanical equipment including wiring harnesses and electromechanical assemblies.
- Coordinate project mobilisation including tooling, labour, materials and equipment.
- Manage subcontractors and ensure safe working practices are maintained.
- Monitor project progress, resolving technical issues and ensuring delivery against programme.
- Provide technical support to installation teams and customers.
- Support engineering change management and ensure documentation is kept up to date.
- Assist with project estimating, installation planning and tender support.
- Manage tooling, calibration records and workshop facilities.
- Promote continuous improvement across installation processes and project delivery.
- Build strong relationships with customers and act as the technical representative on site.
What We're Looking For
We're keen to hear from candidates with experience in rolling stock maintenance, production or engineering environments.
You'll ideally have experience as a:
- Production Manager
- Shift Production Manager
- Depot Manager
- Maintenance Team Leader
- Vehicle Modification Engineer
- Commissioning Engineer
- Technical Support Engineer
- Engineering qualification (electrical, mechanical or related discipline).
- Experience delivering rolling stock or vehicle modification programmes.
- Strong electrical and mechanical fault‑finding skills.
- Knowledge of engineering safety and quality standards.
- Ability to lead teams on site and coordinate engineering activities.
- Experience producing engineering documentation including RAMS and work instructions.
- Strong planning and organisational skills.
- Confident communicator with excellent problem‑solving ability.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel across the UK and stay away from home when required.
- Rolling stock modification or depot experience.
- Rail vehicle electrical installation experience.
- Experience managing subcontractors.
- Knowledge of project delivery processes.
- Understanding of materials planning and supplier coordination.
- Experience supporting bids and estimating project costs.
