A little more about your role…

We are seeking a Principal Engineer to support our current workloads in the south and southeast regions. You will be based in one of our offices in Southampton, Basingstoke, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Guildford, Reading, or London.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Working directly with clients on sustainable transport initiatives, managing traffic engineering and road safety schemes, analyzing collision data, speed management, providing safety reviews of highway design proposals, and conducting Road Safety Audits.
  2. Supporting the team as a Road Safety / Engineering designer, helping to grow our client relationships.
  3. Preparing and reviewing reports, drawings, schedules, and other documents following local procedures and guidance.
  4. Managing project financial performance.
  5. Conducting technical reviews and checking design deliverables within the team.
  6. Collaborating with the Liveable Places team, transport colleagues, and the wider WSP business to achieve objectives.

The Liveable Places team works with local authorities and private clients across the UK to realize placemaking ambitions. We deliver schemes from concept to delivery, including public realm, traffic engineering, transport planning, road safety, traffic signals, pedestrian/traffic modeling, active travel, and parking. Our recent projects include collaborations with West Sussex, East Sussex, West Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, West of England, Devon, Westminster, and others.

The team is based across the country with over 200 staff and plans for further growth. We are passionate and skilled, offering opportunities to develop your career through diverse experiences. This role provides a pivotal opportunity within the team to support its growth.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • Knowledge of the Safe System of working.
  • Experience managing colleagues and projects, including monitoring budgets.
  • Expertise in road safety, ensuring highway design standards and guidance are met and providing safe solutions for all road users.
  • Significant experience analyzing collision data and devising safety solutions. Qualified as a Team Leader per DMRB GG 119 and capable of conducting Road Safety Audits.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize, and maintain service levels.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and build stakeholder relationships.
