Job Summary:

The RN First Assistant (RNFA) functions as the surgical first assistant under the direction and supervision of the surgeon during the intra-operative phase of surgery. The RNFA will also serve in the role of a Registered Nurse, according to the needs of the department.

The incumbent in this position will support the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of Mary Washington Healthcare and must demonstrate a commitment to quality service to patients, physicians, the public and co-workers.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with procedural set up and patient preparedness for specific procedures in positioning, prepping and draping.
  2. Assists the surgeon in skin closure, subcutaneous closure and ties, fascia closure and ties, closure and ties of peritoneum, tying deep vessels, incising tissue, and performs hemostatic techniques.
  3. Establishes and maintains a safe peri-operative environment. Observes aseptic techniques in preparing for and assisting with procedures.
  4. Participates in patient transport and room turnover as indicated by unit activity to facilitate utilization of services in a cost-effective manner.
  5. Functions in the role of a Registered Nurse and circulates cases, as needed.
  6. Serves as educator, mentor and resource to patients and colleagues.
  7. Performs other duties assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Graduation from a surgical first assistant program required.
  2. Valid RN License from Virginia or reciprocal compact state required.
  3. Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) certification required.
  4. AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire.
  5. BSN is preferred; all Registered Nurses with an Associate's Degree in Nursing will be required to obtain their BSN within five years of hire (Effective March 2014).
  6. Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) certification preferred.
