Responsibilities

Job Summary

The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, which may include activities such as administering medication, starting, maintaining, and discontinuing IV lines, administering therapies, observing and recording patient conditions, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians. The RN also teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post-treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self-administration of medication and therapy. Additionally, the RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides and delegates tasks when appropriate.

The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new staff and students, and assists them in completing their competency tasks. The RN continually enhances their knowledge in nursing management and patient care, aiming to improve patient experiences, clinical outcomes, and promote a healthy work environment. Nursing practices are evidence-based and utilize a Shared Governance model for decision-making.

All RN staff responsible for stroke patients must have knowledge of:

  • Stroke symptoms and warning signs
  • Protocols and pathways for stroke management
  • NIHSS
  • Stroke Alert activation and protocol
  • Stroke quality indicators
  • Educational materials and community resources for stroke patients
  • Educational requirements
  • Stroke Center website resources

Responsibilities include:

  1. Collecting health data systematically and involving family, analyzing data for diagnoses, and developing family-centered, culturally relevant care plans.
  2. Setting expected outcomes tailored to the patient's health problems and developing evidence-based care plans.
  3. Implementing interventions, initiating treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures, and providing holistic nursing care.
  4. Evaluating patient progress, documenting care, and ensuring quality and effectiveness of care plans.
  5. Self-evaluating nursing practice against standards and maintaining current knowledge.
  6. Integrating ethical principles and understanding cultural diversity in practice.
  7. Collaborating with healthcare team members and contributing to professional development.
  8. Developing and evaluating standards of care, and participating in research and evidence-based practice improvements.
  9. Planning and delivering patient care considering safety, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency.

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing. For stroke care, refer to the addendum for specific education requirements prior to start.
  • All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 10 years of RN experience.
  • Graduate from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution.

Experience

  • >10 months in med-surg or an acute specialty setting.
  • 1 year RN experience required for all Float Positions.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Arizona or a Compact State, required upon hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, required upon hire.
  • Unit-specific certification as required by specialty area, required upon hire.
