Job summary

Thames Water is seeking a Risk and Controls Manager (NHH) to oversee governance, risk, compliance and resilience across the Non-Household market. You will collaborate with internal teams and senior stakeholders to ensure robust controls, effective risk management, and regulatory adherence.

Base location is Hybrid in Swindon (Newbridge Square). Full-time, 36 hours per week. You will own RACMs, support audits, and drive continuous improvement in controls and service performance.

Responsibilities

• Provide oversight of governance, risk, compliance and resilience activities across the Non-Household market.
• Ensure effective controls are in place, risks are managed, and regulatory obligations are met.
• Maintain and report on delivery governance through key committees.
• Own and maintain the Retail Risk Register, identify, manage and escalate risks.
• Contribute to principal risk reporting and dashboards with insights and recommendations.
• Develop, maintain and test Business Continuity Plans for service resilience.
• Develop, test and monitor RACM; support internal/external audits and regulatory reviews.
• Embed control operating requirements and oversee compliance activities.
• Manage RoPA documentation and information governance requirements.
• Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and promote continuous improvement.

Are you experienced in governance, risk, and compliance, with a passion for driving operational excellence? As a Risk and Controls Manager (NHH), you'll play a key role in ensuring effective governance, regulatory compliance, risk management, and business resilience across our Non-Household market activities. Working closely with internal teams, senior stakeholders, and external partners, you'll help protect business performance, strengthen control frameworks, and drive continuous improvement.

What you'll be doing as a Risk and Controls Manager (NHH)

You'll be responsible for providing oversight of governance, risk, compliance, and resilience activities across the Non-Household market. Working collaboratively with stakeholders across the business, you'll ensure effective controls are in place, risks are managed appropriately, and regulatory obligations are met.

• Establish and maintain effective delivery governance, including reporting into key committees.
• Own and maintain the Retail Risk Register, ensuring risks are effectively identified, managed, and escalated.
• Lead reviews of local risk registers and ensure appropriate actions are implemented.
• Contribute to principal risk reporting and dashboards, providing insights and recommendations.
• Maintain compliance with regulatory, contractual, and industry obligations.
• Own and develop Risk and Control Matrices (RACM), ensuring appropriate controls and monitoring are in place.
• Support internal and external audits, regulatory reviews, and control assessments, ensuring actions are delivered to completion.
• Embed control operating requirements and provide ongoing oversight of compliance activities.
• Manage Records of Processing Activities (RoPA) and support information governance requirements.
• Develop, maintain, and test Business Continuity Plans to ensure service resilience.
• Build effective relationships with internal stakeholders, senior leaders, and external partners.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to strengthen processes, controls, and service performance.

Base location: Hybrid - Newbridge Square, Swindon

Working pattern: Full-time, 36 hours per week (Monday to Friday)

To thrive in this role, the essential criteria you'll need are:

• Experience working within governance, risk, compliance, controls, or audit environments.
• Strong relationship-building, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and engage people at all levels.
• A naturally curious mindset, with the confidence to challenge existing processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret information, identify risks, and make recommendations.
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work accurately within a regulated environment.
• A customer-focused approach, balancing business needs with positive customer outcomes.
• Experience managing risk registers, control frameworks, compliance activities, or governance processes.
• The ability to prioritise workloads effectively and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.

Additional skills and experiences that would be great to bring:

• Experience working within the water industry or wider utilities sector.
• Experience of business continuity planning and resilience management.
• Knowledge of data protection and information governance requirements.
• Experience supporting regulatory compliance activities within a regulated environment.

• 26 days holiday per year, increasing to 28 with length of service. (plus bank holidays)
