Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

Risk Analyst (Fixed term / secondment opportunity for an initial period of 12 months)

It’s not every job where you can make a difference for the people of Scotland, but it’s what’s behind every job here. The work we do keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from source to tap and from sink to sea. Our activities span the length and breadth of Scotland. From operating water and wastewater treatment works, managing the complex networks of pipes and sewers, to undertaking strategy, planning and investment decisions and working with our customers and communities, our regulators and supply chain partners to protect and enhance our services.

Risk Is Inherent In Everything That We Do. Effective Risk Management Is Key To Ensuring The Continuity And Resilience Of Our Service To Our Customers, As Well As Driving Us Toward Our Three Key Ambitions As Set Out Within The Water Sector Vision

  • Service Excellence; adapting to a changing climate, dealing with our ageing assets and meeting our customers’ evolving expectations.
  • Beyond Net Zero Emissions; showing leadership in mitigating climate change and enhancing Scotland’s natural environment.
  • Great Value and Financial Sustainability; customers will receive great value, now and in the future, and we will be financially sustainable.

Within the Corporate Risk Team, we focus on the biggest risks (both threats and opportunities) to Scottish Water. Those risks which could significantly impact the services we provide to our customers, our strategic direction, our finances and our people.

Working within the Corporate Risk Team no two days will be the same. We work in a complex, dynamic and ever developing environment, striving to understand the risks we encounter today and how effectively we are managing them.

We also actively consider the threats and opportunities we could face in the future, supporting the identification and understanding of forecasts, trends and patterns, internally and externally, and challenging the business on the best approach to navigating these.

What You’ll Do

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to join the Corporate Risk Team for an initial period of one year. In this time, you will gain valuable insight into the world of risk management and the essential activities of Scottish Water.

You Will Fulfil Four Key Roles Within The Team

  • Enablon System Expert: You will be the go-to person for our digital risk management solution, ensuring the system is not just maintained, but continuously enhanced to deliver accurate, accessible, and consistent risk data across corporate and functional risk levels. You will identify opportunities to optimise system use, support users, and unlock the full value of our risk technology.
  • Data Insights & Visualisation Guru – You will harness data within the Enablon system to uncover patterns, trends, and emerging risks — translating complex information into actionable insights for the team and wider business. Using tools like Power BI, you will develop intuitive dashboards and visual reports that support strategic decision-making and enhance transparency across the organisation.
  • Risk Influencer – You will help embed a strong risk culture by delivering targeted communication to key business areas, integrating risk into performance conversations, and leading engaging education and communication initiatives. From managing our dedicated SharePoint hub to crafting compelling messages across multiple channels such as Viva Engage, you’ll make risk relevant and relatable.
  • Fortune Teller – You will play a key role in our Horizon Scanning activities — researching future threats and opportunities, analysing trends, and helping the organisation stay ahead of the curve. Your insights will shape strategic conversations and support proactive decision-making.

You will report to a Principal Corporate Risk Specialist within the Corporate Risk Team; and will work alongside a small team of risk professionals as well as key contacts from across Scottish Water.

What You’ll Bring

You will ideally be educated to degree level and hold a suitable qualification in a risk related discipline. But what really sets you apart is your mindset. You are someone who instinctively spots potential issues, embraces uncertainty, and brings clarity to complexity. You think ahead, ask the right questions, and help others make confident, informed decisions.

You are analytical and curious, with a talent for turning research into insight. You’re comfortable juggling multiple priorities and working independently, but you also thrive in a collaborative environment. Your communication—both written and verbal—is clear, compelling, and tailored to your audience. And your attention to detail? Second to none.

Most importantly, you will live and breathe the Scottish Water Character. Whether you are working with colleagues, customers, or external partners, you will show up Bold, Responsible, Inspiring, and Caring—every day, in everything you do.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our defined benefit pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), and generous life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 6. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £ 33,560. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £ 44,140.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until the 22nd July 2025

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, driving license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
