Job overview

We are currently looking for an experienced and highly motivated nurse to join the Rheumatology Day Unit team at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

The NOC Rheumatology department is one of the leading units in the areas of rheumatology and musculoskeletal services; we pride ourselves in delivering first class clinical care to patients. You will join a small team providing intravenous biologic therapies to treat patients with autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.

Cannulation, venepuncture and Rheumatology experience are desirable but not essential as training can be provided.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Manage a case load of patients within the RDU ensuring adherence to clinical, local and national guidelines.

Assess patients' suitability for treatment and inform patients of decision and be able to explain reasoning behind the decision.

Support a patient centred approach to care which encourages participation of patients and their carers.

Be able, with training where required, to carry out cannulation, venepuncture and safe administration of specialist IV therapies.

Monitor and report any difficulties related to running the service in the clinical areas concerned.

Record and report any adverse events in accordance to Trust policies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will:

Manage a case load of patients within the RDU ensuring adherence to clinical, local and national guidelines.

Assess patients' suitability for treatment and inform patients of decision and be able to explain reasoning behind the decision.

Support a patient centred approach to care which encourages participation of patients and their carers.

Recognise the role as a health care educator for patients, staff and carers, and to strive to incorporate this function into clinical practice, and across the primary/secondary care interface.

Act as an expert resource for colleagues within and outside the Trust.

Be able, with training where required, to carry out cannulation, venepuncture and safe administration of specialist IV therapies.

Take on extended role as required, and as per aptitude.

Monitor and report any difficulties related to running the service in the clinical areas concerned.

Record and report any adverse events in accordance to Trust policies.

Develop and maintain clinical skills to support services delivery as agreed with clinical lead and line manager.

Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice at all times.

Person specification
Training & Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (Part 1. 8. 12 or 15 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register depending on area of practice) or National Certification in area of Practice.
  • UK recognised Degree in Nursing relevant to post
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of an NMC revalidation or equivalent
  • Post-graduate qualification related to an area of practice
Clinical Practice
  • Articulate and knowledgeable of skills needed to deliver a high standard of care in the area of practice.
  • Able to document observations, results, decisions and actions etc. effectively in patient’s notes and communicate these effectively to appropriate members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience administering intravenous drug therapy
  • Previous experience in rheumatology nursing
  • Able to proactively contribute to the education of learners and non-registered and less experienced staff
  • Venepuncture and cannulation skills
