Job summary

Filtronic is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team and develop RF and microwave products from concept through production. You will design robust, lightweight mechanical assemblies, create detailed CAD models, and work with RF, electronics and PCB teams to optimise performance.

The role emphasizes thermal management, EMI shielding and reliability in high-reliability environments, including space-related applications.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Proficient in 2D/3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks.
• Experience designing high-precision assemblies for demanding environments.
• Knowledge of PCB integration, RF shielding and EMI considerations.
• Experience with machining of aluminium alloys and lightweight structures.
• Excellent GD&T and engineering drawing standards.

Responsibilities

• Design precision mechanical components and assemblies for RF modules and systems, including lightweight enclosures, heatsinks, liquid cooling solutions and waveguide-based architectures.
• Develop modular mechanical architectures for integration into larger payload or system-level assemblies.
• Ensure designs meet RF, thermal, mechanical and environmental requirements including EMI shielding and vibration resistance.
• Create 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
• Perform thermal analysis and CFD to validate cooling strategies for high-power RF amplifiers.
• Conduct FEA for vibration, shock and load-case conditions; validate with test data.
• Collaborate with RF, electronics and systems engineers to optimise mechanical features affecting RF performance.
• Develop manufacturability and cost-reduction designs using CNC, die-casting, additive and sheet metal processes.
• Generate manufacturing documentation and manage drawing control per ISO standards.
