Job description

We’re looking for an experienced Reward and Recognition Lead to join us and help shape how we attract, keep and reward the people who make the National Trust what it is. You’ll be leading a small but brilliant team, building on a strong reward plan with the opportunity to be part of our next chapter.

The pay landscape is shifting, and we’ve got some big changes ahead with our grade structure and pay framework. We’ve made a good start, but there’s still lots to do and we’re looking for someone who can lead the way.

Please note the advertised salary is inclusive of a £7,500 reviewable market supplement. Your base salary will be between £49,000 and £59,000 and you’ll receive the market supplement as an allowance on top.

What it's like to work here

You’ll report to the Head of Engagement & Reward and be part of a People Engagement team that cares deeply about fairness and inclusion.

We support 22 job families – from curators to gardeners, retailers to IT – and help managers feel confident recognising their teams. The work is varied and fast-paced, but always meaningful.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there’ll be an expectation for you to attend the office to collaborate. However, there’s flexibility on where you’re based at other times. You’ll be required to work at a National Trust location for 40-60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.

What you'll be doing

Working with the Head of Engagement & Reward, you’ll shape a total reward plan that supports our People strategy. You’ll collaborate across the People team and wider organisation, building strong relationships and making sure reward is well understood and well delivered.

You’ll lead a small, talented team, manage our annual pay review, and use data and insight to guide decisions. You’ll also oversee job evaluation and organisational design, and help prepare papers for senior leaders, including the Executive team and Trustees.

With a focus on fairness and inclusion, you’ll design reward policies that improve the experience of our people. You’ll bring a strong reward voice to wider People projects and build networks to stay connected to best practice.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • experience in designing and delivering reward activities and solutions to a wide range of clients in a large, matrix organisation
  • experience leading and implementing complex pay review processes,
  • confidence and experience in job evaluation methodology, preferably Hay
  • experience in people leadership and can inspire others through effective coaching, collaboration & upskilling
  • ability to take a pragmatic yet sensitive approach to problem solving
  • analytical, planning and prioritisation skills, alongside a calm approach to a busy cyclical workload
  • ability to think strategically and see the broader perspective during times of ambiguity

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
  • Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18)

  • Holiday allowance up to 32 days relating to length of service, plus holiday purchase scheme, subject to meeting minimum criteria.
  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Free parking at most Trust places
