Job Description:

We're excited to be advertising our retail trainee manager programme to future leaders in London. The programme is your opportunity to develop into your first management role with Sainsbury's or Argos.

Being a manager involves taking on leadership responsibilities, making decisions, and on occasion overseeing the running of a store. Customers and colleagues are at the heart of a line manager role, and ensuring a safe, legal, and secure store. To help you develop as a leader, we’ve designed a three-phase learning journey to help you gain the knowledge and skills required to be a first-line manager.

If successful in your application, you will be placed in a store, with considerations for your current residence and travel time. Some flexibility on location will be required, and we’ll discuss the opportunities available at your interview. Whether the role you’re placed in at the end of the programme is managing a Convenience store, Argos, or one of our Supermarkets, we’re looking for raw potential, whether you have no leadership experience or just a little. We value your unique strengths and experiences and are dedicated to supporting your development. We’ll offer you a competitive salary and benefits, as well as flexibility in hours (Part-Time and Full-Time opportunities available) and locations. This programme offers a platform for you to shine and advance your career in our thriving retail environment.

What you'll do

The programme consists of three phases.

Phase 1 is a focused 6-week learning journey with a cohort of trainee managers, acquiring knowledge and skills through instructor-led workshops, tasks, and e-learning. During training, you'll also immerse yourself in the role of a colleague. At the end of Phase 1, you'll be assigned a management role in a Sainsbury's supermarket, convenience store, or Argos store, which will be your permanent role, likely requiring a location change.

During Phase 2, you'll receive role-specific training and practical experience over 12 weeks, supported by job experts and your line manager. Successful completion leads to a permanent retail manager position, moving into Phase 3.

In Phase 3, you'll perform the full role of a retail manager while re-joining your cohort for the final 12 weeks. Focus will be on behavioral skills like managing performance, giving feedback, and team dynamics.

Who you are

We seek motivated individuals passionate about food, customer service, and our products. You may have no leadership experience but are eager to learn and develop skills in communication, teamwork, and customer service. We are excited to start your leadership journey with us.

The Process

Application involves answering questions to assess your fit. Successful candidates will be contacted for an interview, followed by a job offer if successful. We’re advertising from 2nd November, with interviews from late November to early December. Cohorts start in early January.

What we’ll give you

Starting salary is £13.15/hour, with incremental increases after 6 weeks and upon role sign-off at week 18, depending on the role appointed to, e.g.,

Customer and Trading Manager (Sainsbury’s): £31,650

Job Family Manager (Sainsbury’s): £33,650

Additional benefits include:

  • 10-15% shopping discounts at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Tu, and Habitat
  • Free food and hot drinks in stores
  • Generous holiday, maternity, and paternity leave
  • Matching pension contributions (4-7%)
  • Sainsbury’s share scheme
