Job Description:

We're excited to be advertising our retail trainee manager programme to future leaders in London. The programme is your opportunity to develop into your first management role with Sainsbury's or Argos.

Being a manager involves taking on leadership responsibilities, making decisions, and overseeing store operations. Customers and colleagues are at the heart of a line manager role, ensuring a safe, legal, and secure store environment. To help you develop as a leader, we've designed a three-phase learning journey to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to become a first-line manager.

If successful, you will be placed in a store, with consideration of your current residence and travel time. Flexibility on location will be discussed at your interview. The placement could be in a Convenience store, Argos, or a supermarket. We value raw potential, regardless of leadership experience, and are dedicated to supporting your development. We offer a competitive salary, benefits, and flexibility in hours (part-time and full-time options) and locations, providing a platform for career growth in retail.

What you'll do

The programme consists of three phases:

  1. Phase 1: A 6-week learning journey with workshops, tasks, and e-learning to prepare you for a management role. You will also gain experience as a store colleague. After Phase 1, you will be assigned to a management role in a Sainsbury's supermarket, convenience store, or Argos store, depending on the placement.
  2. Phase 2: 12 weeks of role-specific training and practical experience, supported by job experts and your line manager. Successful completion leads to a permanent management position and transition to Phase 3.
  3. Phase 3: Full management responsibilities while refining behavioural skills such as performance management, giving feedback, and team dynamics, over the final 12 weeks.

Who you are

We seek motivated individuals passionate about food, customer service, and our products. Leadership experience is not required; enthusiasm to learn and skills in communication, teamwork, and customer service are valued. We’re excited to support your leadership journey.

The Process

Application involves answering questions to assess fit. Selected candidates will be contacted for interviews, with successful applicants receiving job offers. The programme is advertised from November 2nd, with interviews from late November to early December, and a start date in early January.

What we’ll give you

Starting salary is £13.15/hour, with increases after 6 weeks and upon role confirmation at week 18, reaching up to:

  • Customer and Trading Manager (Sainsbury's): £31,650
  • Job Family Manager (Sainsbury's): £33,650

Benefits include:

  • 10% discount at Sainsbury's, Argos, Tu, Habitat after four weeks, increasing to 15% on Fridays and Saturdays at Sainsbury's and on pay days at Argos.
