Job description

Royal Voluntary Service has an opportunity available for a Retail Customer Assistant to join our team at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital RVS Cafe, Bristol Road South, Birmingham, B31 2AP. You will join us on a part-time, permanent basis, and in return, you will receive a competitive salary of £12.43 per hour (FTE £22,638 per annum).

About the Retail Customer Assistant role:

Royal Voluntary Service hospital cafes, shops, and trolley services are integral parts of the NHS and serve as valuable community assets. Staffed by employees and volunteers, we offer a wide range of beverages and healthy food options. Our customers appreciate that their spending supports volunteer actions in hospitals and communities.

Working alongside a friendly team of employees and volunteers, you will participate in the daily operations of our busy retail Cafe at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  1. Providing friendly, helpful, and efficient service at all times
  2. Welcoming customers, informing them about specials or new products, answering questions, and processing orders and payments
  3. Operating the till and cashing up
  4. Maintaining high standards of cleanliness in compliance with Health and Safety and food hygiene standards
  5. Ensuring stock levels and displays are replenished regularly and ordering supplies if needed

Hours: 10 hours per week

This is a permanent, part-time role working:

  • Friday 4 hrs (13:00-17:00)
  • Saturday 09:30-15:30

Our retail sites may operate on weekends and bank holidays.

Paid overtime may be available during busy periods or to cover absences.

What you’ll bring as our Retail Customer Assistant:

Working in a hospital requires excellent customer service skills. Your friendly and cheerful communication will make a positive difference. Adapting your approach to meet individual needs is key.

  • Experience in retail or café environment is advantageous, but training will be provided—just bring a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of EPOS/till systems is beneficial.
  • Experience with administrative processes is a plus.
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing training and development.
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Familiarity with email and internet use
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills
  • Flexible approach to working hours
  • Enjoy working within a passionate team and independently when needed
