Job description
Overview

The purpose of this role is to assist in the delivery of high-quality respiratory physiology diagnostic and monitoring services to patients, under supervision. The post-holder will perform routine respiratory function tests and contribute to sleep diagnostic services, supporting accurate diagnosis and effective patient management.

Main duties and responsibilities

Clinical & Technical

  • Perform and interpret routine respiratory investigations in accordance with ARTP/BTS standards, including:
  • Spirometry
  • Lung volumes and gas transfer
  • Bronchodilator reversibility testing
  • Oximetry
  • Assist with six minute walk tests
  • Assist in the set-up of sleep studies
  • Ensure equipment is appropriately maintained, calibrated, and safe for use
  • Maintain accurate records of investigations and ensure timely entry of results onto clinical systems
  • Contribute to audit and quality assurance activities

Patient Care

  • Provide a high standard of care and reassurance to patients during physiological testing
  • Explain procedures clearly to patients, addressing any concerns and ensuring informed consent
  • Promote patient dignity, comfort, and safety at all times

Professional

  • Work in line with departmental policies, procedures, and ARTP/NHS best practice guidance
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with NHS and Trust policies
  • Participate in continued professional development (CPD) and training
  • Assist senior staff in research, service development, and student training as appropriate

Governance & Safety

  • Adhere to infection control policies and ensure safe working practices in all areas
  • Report equipment faults, incidents, or risks promptly in line with Trust policy
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe and supportive working environment

  • Experience working within an NHS respiratory physiology department
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills
  • Eligible for voluntary registration with RCCP/HCPC (or working towards)

  • Knowledge of respiratory physiology, diagnostic techniques, and patient care principles
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a small, supportive team
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
