Are you an experienced respiratory nurse or a physiotherapist looking for a new challenge?

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our virtual ward team. This role involves providing respiratory assessment, advice, and support to patients in their own homes.

The successful applicant will have a proven track record in respiratory care, a sound knowledge of respiratory physiology and disease processes, familiarity with oxygen and pulmonary rehabilitation, and the ability to teach and support patients with self-management.

You will work in and be supported by a multidisciplinary care team including nurses, doctors, therapists, and psychologists. Community Respiratory services will be supported with a Professional Lead to assist with complex cases and service quality improvement.

The virtual ward operates 7 days a week. The post holder will work during weekends on a rota basis and in shift patterns—early, standard, and late shifts.

Main duties of the job
  1. Manage virtual ward beds in liaison with BHRUT respiratory consultants to optimize bed capacity across areas.
  2. Collaborate with referring services to accept or decline patients onto the Virtual Ward.
  3. Practice autonomously with expert knowledge, complex decision-making skills, and advanced clinical competencies.
  4. Initiate pharmacological interventions, review medications, and ensure adherence to Trust guidelines, including non-medical prescribing.
  5. Request investigations and interpret results to make clinical decisions.
  6. Manage discharge planning collaboratively to optimize health outcomes and resource use.

Working for our organisation

Probationary Period: This post is subject to a probation period, except for internal applicants.

High-Cost Area Supplement: An additional 15% of basic salary, with a minimum of £4,551 and a maximum of £5,735, pro-rata for part-time staff.

Person specification

Qualifications: Registered with NMC or HCPC, current registration, first degree or equivalent, relevant respiratory modules, and a master's degree in respiratory care or equivalent.

Experience: Evidence of CPD, non-medical prescribing, at least 3 years post-registration, 2 years in respiratory, mentoring experience, advanced assessment skills, experience with virtual wards, and membership of relevant professional bodies.

Skills: Valid UK driver’s license (with reasonable adjustments for disabilities), experience with QI or research projects, spirometry, blood gas analysis, etc.
