Job summary

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a SEND Residential Teaching Assistant to work in Barnstaple, Devon, supporting children and young people with SEND in both educational and residential settings.

The role runs Monday to Friday, 8:45am–3:45pm during term time, with a pay rate of £95–£105 per day. Start ASAP. Full-time contract.

No prior SEND or residential experience is required, though desirable; you’ll have access to CPD and progression opportunities.

Qualifications

• Previous SEND, residential, care, education, or support work experience is desirable.
• Transferable experience such as care work, youth work, psychology, support work, or family SEND experience.
• A patient, resilient, and compassionate approach.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• The ability to remain calm and consistent when supporting challenging behaviour.
• A genuine desire to support young people and help them develop their independence.
• A willingness to learn and develop within a specialist SEND environment.

Responsibilities

• Support children and young people with SEND within an educational and residential environment.
• Provide 1:1 and small-group support, adapting your approach to individual needs.
• Support pupils with communication, emotional wellbeing, behaviour regulation, and social development.
• Encourage independence, confidence, and positive relationships.
• Assist with the implementation of EHCPs, individual support plans, and behaviour plans.
• Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils and provide consistent support.
• Work closely with teachers, residential staff, therapists, SENCo, and other professionals.
• Support pupils with daily routines and develop their life skills and independence.

The Role:
