The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Residential Monitor position in the Birmingham Command Women’s Unit, located in Birmingham, AL. This is a part-time weekend-only position. Starting pay rate is $12.77 per hour. We are hiring for Saturday and Sunday shifts from 8 pm to 8 am.

Job Summary:

Accepts and processes residents in the housing unit/shelter; monitors resident activity during assigned shifts to ensure safety, security, and compliance with house rules; maintains accurate records and logs with pertinent information; keeps the lodge/shelter in a neat and proper order.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of basic recordkeeping practices and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with clients, control, lead, and motivate behavior.
  • Ability to work with the public, handling various behaviors.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while enforcing established policies and procedures.
Education and Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred, along with one year of experience in security or social services, or any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating in English.
  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergency situations, maintaining control and initiating proper actions.
  • Ability to perform sitting, standing, and walking frequently.
  • Limited physical effort required (less than 25 lbs. lifting/carrying), with 5-10% of work time spent on physical activities.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Work is performed in a lodge/shelter environment with minimal physical discomforts from weather or environmental factors.
