As Resident Medical Officer, you’ll play a crucial role providing on-call cover for Cygnet Hospital Stevenage. This 82-bed hospital offers a range of secure, PICU, and acute mental health services for men and women in a purpose-built therapeutic environment focused on maximizing positive outcomes and recovery.
With accommodation and meals provided, you’ll be onsite during on-call duties (5 pm to 9 am and weekend shifts), working on a rota of 4 days on / 3 days off.
During other times, when covering colleagues' planned leave, you will work from 9 am to 5 pm.

Main duties and Responsibilities
- Assess new referrals and inpatients on admission through thorough history-taking and physical examinations.
- Ensure physical and mental health care of patients by conducting reviews with nursing staff during on-call shifts.
- Liaise with the on-call Consultant Psychiatrist for advice as needed.
- Prescribe and review medication with the support of the Consultant Psychiatrist when required.
- Coordinate with the multidisciplinary team, GPs, relatives, and other agencies.
- Perform medical reviews on patients in seclusion or long-term segregation.
- Complete patient notes and documentation promptly.
- Receive regular supervision from the Medical Director or nominee to support professional development.
- Keep the Medical Director updated on clinical matters through appropriate handovers.
- The Specialty Doctor role involves working as a ward doctor providing physical and mental health care under clinical supervision.
- Cover ward doctors’ planned leave between 9 am and 5 pm when RMO duties are temporarily suspended.

Candidate Requirements
- Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent)
- Excellent clinical decision-making skills, sound judgment, risk management, and knowing when to seek help
- Experience in Psychiatry
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Strong communication skills for interviewing, assessing, treating patients, and documenting medical notes
