Are you considering a career in Emergency Medicine? We are looking for enthusiastic doctors eager to develop their clinical, academic, and leadership skills. We have a proven track record of helping doctors pass the MRCEM and FRCEM exams and advance to become Consultants in Emergency Medicine.

We operate a busy Emergency Department at Watford General Hospital in Hertfordshire. The position is for a Senior Clinical Fellow within an established Middle Grade tier, supported by a dynamic team of Consultants.

Main duties of the job
  1. Assess, diagnose, and treat patients within the ED and CED.
  2. Maintain clinical responsibility for your patients, delegating and training team members appropriately.
  3. Advise junior doctors and Nurse Practitioners on patient management and authorize referrals to specialty teams.
  4. Coordinate with other specialists and GPs, and lead treatment in the resuscitation area.

This position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in acute care from an Emergency Medicine perspective, focusing on shop floor supervision and patient care, ensuring rapid assessment and management of patients.

Job description & responsibilities

The Clinical Fellow's main role is to support and supervise FY2s and Nurse Practitioners, providing direct patient care alongside middle-grade doctors, under consultant supervision. There is a 16-hour daily consultant presence (8 am to midnight), ensuring strong support and learning opportunities.

The department has introduced new working patterns, including roles such as ED controller, Resuscitation lead, and Senior Team for Assessment and Rapid Response (STARR), to ensure early patient assessment and oversight of the ED. Middle-grade doctors rotate through these roles, with consultants committed to teaching and professional development. Certificates in ATLS, APLS, and ALS are expected or to be obtained during the appointment.

The rota provides 24-hour coverage with a 1:3 weekend pattern. The post involves mainly out-of-hours clinical work, negotiable with the rota coordinator. The appointee will participate in management activities to develop future leadership skills, embodying the Trust’s values of Commitment, Care, and Quality.

Person Specification

Essential qualifications and experience:

  • MBChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • Provider status in ALS
  • MRCEM Part A
  • Instructor status in at least one of: ALS, ATLS, APLS, EPLS
  • ST3 level or equivalent understanding of clinical audit
  • Previous NHS experience
  • Broad awareness of emergency medicine issues
  • Competencies in ACCS and CT3 EM training specialties
  • Experience working at Middle Grade level in ED
  • Experience in teaching and organizing training
  • Procedural skills relevant to Emergency Medicine
  • Trauma team leader experience
  • Formal teaching qualifications
  • Experience in clinical risk management and medical education/simulation interests
