The Opportunity:

Avantor is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Research Technician (Discovery Bioanalysis) to join our team based in Cambridge, UK.

In this role, you’ll be responsible for scanning historical human tissue samples, performing image quality checks, and ensuring accurate data management across digital platforms. This 12-month temporary role is ideal for recent science graduates looking to gain hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, while contributing to a transformative initiative in digital pathology.

This role is a part-time, temporary position (12-month contract) based in a brand-new facility at the customer site – The Discovery Centre, Bio-Medical Campus in Cambridge. In addition to a competitive salary, you’ll benefit from working in a cutting-edge research environment and gaining valuable experience in digital pathology and AI-driven research.

Working hours: Friday to Monday, 8:00/9:00 – 16:00/17:00 (32 hours per week)

The Team

You’ll be part of our business department, Lab and Production Services, which supports major pharmaceutical companies and laboratories worldwide in Research and Development within the Life Sciences industry. You’ll join a dedicated team delivering specialist support to the AstraZeneca CPSS Pathology function, playing a key role in maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring seamless weekend operations.

What we’re looking for

Education:

  • A scientific degree in a bioscience discipline or equivalent experience

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of laboratory experience, ideally in a histopathology setting
  • Experience with digital pathology techniques and slide scanning is desirable
  • Familiarity with SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) policies and procedures
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
  • Excellent organisational and time management abilities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with minimal supervision
  • Proven customer service focus and ability to communicate effectively across teams
  • High attention to detail and a proactive, flexible approach to work

How you will thrive and create an impact

  • Perform routine digital pathology slide scanning and initiate weekend instrument runs to deliver high-quality image data
  • Conduct quality control of image metadata and manage ingestion/transfer of image files across databases
  • Act as a point of contact for science teams, accurately capturing and responding to requests
  • Maintain laboratory tidiness and ensure compliance with internal and external safety standards
  • Support troubleshooting and continuous improvement processes within the pathology workflow
