Job description

Applications are invited for a Research Technician to join the group of Dr Richard Meek to study the role of carbohydrates in brain calcification. This project funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences will use immunofluorescence, mass spectrometry, cell-based assays, and biophysical approaches with recombinant proteins to explore how dysfunctional carbohydrate-processing causes disease. Previous experience in these techniques is desirable. The post offers huge potential in understanding the molecular basis of brain signalling and neurological disorders.

This project located in the School of Biological Sciences, boasts a wealth of expertise in neuroscience and glycobiology. You will be part of a vibrant and friendly glycobiology hub at Southampton using cutting-edge approaches to understand disease mechanisms, and you will be offered the opportunity to learn and apply these exciting techniques.

About the Role

Experience in purifying proteins using FPLCs and cell culture is essential. You will also be required to maintain and use both human and insect cell lines for generating proteins and various biochemical assays. The role requires strong organisational skills, including the ability to maintain detailed and dated laboratory and electronic notes.

The post is available for 18 months and is offered on a full-time basis.

About You

You will have laboratory experience in glycobiology, biochemistry, or a closely related area and be able to work independently. Excellent written and verbal English is required.
