Job summary

European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts is seeking a Research Software Engineer (A2) to contribute to core data encoding/decoding capabilities and to the ecCodes open‑source package.

You will join a multidisciplinary international team developing software for meteorological and environmental data formats, focusing on reliability and long‑term evolution of data handling capabilities across production and research pipelines.

Qualifications

• Advanced university degree (EQ7 level or above) or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, computational science, physics, mathematics or related field.
• Proven experience developing and maintaining scientific/technical software in a collaborative environment.
• Strong programming skills in C, C++, Python or Rust.
• Experience with software engineering practices: testing, debugging, version control, CI.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance the company software libraries and tools for encoding/decoding meteorological data.
• Support and improve workflows involving data formats with emphasis on correctness and performance.
• Collaborate with scientists and developers across member states to translate requirements into robust solutions.
• Apply best practices: version control, code review, automated testing, CI and release processes.
• Prepare technical documentation and guidance for users and developers.
• Investigate and resolve issues reported by users and collaborators.
• Engage with external partners and standards bodies as needed.
