Research Scientist – Knowledge & Semantics
Chelmsford (Hybrid – 2 days onsite per week)
£60,000 – £70,000 + 10% Bonus
Security Clearance: Must be eligible for UK SC Clearance

A globally respected research and technology organisation is seeking a Research Scientist to join its Knowledge and Semantics team within a leading-edge AI and data science capability. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of knowledge-driven AI, working at the intersection of knowledge graphs, machine learning, NLP, and semantic reasoning—supporting missions across defence, security, and advanced technologies.

Working within a multi-disciplinary research team, you'll lead the development of innovative solutions using graph machine learning, LLMs, and knowledge representation. You'll also collaborate with UK universities and SME partners, contribute to internal IP, and drive research that translates into operational capability.

What you'll be doing:

• Leading technical delivery of applied AI projects in NLP, semantics, and knowledge representation
• Developing prototypes and proof-of-concept tools using Python and ML frameworks
• Securing research funding and writing technical proposals
• Mentoring junior researchers and providing technical leadership across graph and semantic AI
• Presenting to customers and stakeholders across defence, security, and research communities

What we’re looking for:

• PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant AI/ML discipline
• 4+ years of postdoctoral or industry experience leading research teams
• Strong programming skills in Python and experience with frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow
• Deep expertise in one or more of: NLP, LLMs, graph machine learning, semantic AI, or knowledge graphs
• Proven track record of winning and delivering R&D projects

Please note: Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be eligible for UK Security Clearance, which typically requires at least 5 years of continuous UK residency.
