BAE Systems Digital Intelligence is home to 4,500 digital, cyber and intelligence experts. We work collaboratively across 10 countries to collect, connect and understand complex data, enabling governments, armed forces, and commercial businesses to unlock digital advantage in demanding environments.

We are seeking a team lead for our Knowledge and Semantics team within the Defence Innovation and Technology division. Our Data and Decision Support Capability encompasses teams working in reinforcement learning, NLP, knowledge graphs, LLM applications, computer vision, AI for RF and EW, sonar, and acoustics.

This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on diverse data science projects for the defence, security, and commercial sectors, as well as internal AI programmes. You will also maintain strong links with academic and SME partners and develop your research interests.

The ideal candidate will have experience leading research teams in NLP, LLM applications, text-mining, knowledge graphs, or graph machine learning, with a vision for practical ML solutions. Proven success in proposal writing and project delivery in the Defence sector is essential. Proficiency in Python and experience with ML libraries like TensorFlow or Pytorch are required.

Candidates with a track record in predictive graph ML, causal ML, neuro-symbolic AI, NLP, LLMs in defence, or graph ML are of particular interest.

Responsibilities include:

1. Proposing and leading innovative research, often in partnership with UK universities.
2. Leading technical delivery of projects, including report and proposal preparation.
3. Developing prototypes and proof-of-concept demonstrations.
4. Owning project tasks and delivering to high standards.
5. Presenting results to technical and non-technical audiences.

Essential qualifications:

• PhD with at least 4 years' post-PhD experience.
• Experience leading R&D teams with a minimum of 5 developers.
• Track record securing funding and delivering R&D projects.
• Software development experience in Python.
• Experience with ML frameworks like TensorFlow or Pytorch.

Additional preferred experience includes:

• Graph ML, knowledge graphs, and related tools (e.g., Neo4j).
• Query languages such as SQL or Cypher.
• Knowledge representation, ontology design, and semantic reasoning.
