Job Description:

The Research Scientist/Engineer role provides critical technical support on a range of field and office-based research projects that improve the performance and efficiency of our physical assets and support long-term asset management.

What you’ll be doing as a Research Scientist/Engineer (Clean Water Networks):

  • Supporting development, briefing, and providing technical input to ensure correct engineering solutions, outline designs, and technical requirements within projects.
  • Contributing to Thames Water’s engineering requirements into AMP8 and beyond.
  • Work primarily related to the water network, with some support for water treatment activities.
Key duties include:
  • Innovation trial support: Setting up and monitoring trials with technician and contractor support.
  • Analysis and interpretation: Capturing, analyzing data, and documenting research.
  • Safety, Health, and the Environment: Upholding safety and considering environmental impact.
  • Project support and knowledge transfer: Assisting project managers with information from the Project Management Office.
  • Horizon scanning: Maintaining awareness of new technologies and strategies.
  • Business resilience: Identifying ways to increase infrastructure resilience.
  • Business performance: Supporting reductions in leakage and supply interruptions.
  • External bids: Gaining skills and experience for bid submissions like the Water Breakthrough Challenge.

Base location: Hybrid - Kempton Park Water Treatment Works, TW13 6XH. Attendance at the office at least two days a week, with proximity required on remote days.

Working hours: 36 hours, Monday-Friday

Minimum requirements: Valid UK driving license due to role nature.

Preferred qualifications and skills:

  • Degree in science or engineering, or equivalent.
  • Industry experience in a related discipline.
  • Technical knowledge of water industry or utilities.
  • Practical skills for operation and maintenance of pilot plants.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills.
  • Competent with company IT systems.
  • Innovative mindset and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Keen to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
