Job description

The post holder will support the co-ordination, administration and data collection functions within the Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) team for effective management of our Trust's research portfolio. This will involve facilitation of research feasibility assessments, ensuring efficient initiation, continued delivery and closure of research studies, standardisation and implementation of financial and data systems and support with research activity and performance monitoring/ reporting. There will be close liaison with clinicians, clinical research nurses, trials administration staff, study sponsors, service departments and the North West Regional Research Delivery Network (NW RRDN) to ensure the appropriate review and confirmation of research projects.

The post holder will support the promotion, delivery and monitoring of quality assurance and improvement programmes within research in accordance with Trust and departmental objectives, relevant legislation and standards, good governance and best practice. They will also provide training and advice in best practice to all of our Trust's research active staff.

Main duties of the job

The Research Governance Coordinator will be responsible for providing high-quality governance and administrative support across the Trust's research portfolio. This role is essential in maintaining robust systems of accountability, ensuring that research is conducted safely, ethically, and in compliance with national and international standards. The post holder will act as a central point of coordination for research governance processes, working closely with the Research & Innovation (R&I) Manager, clinical colleagues, trial staff, sponsors, and external partners. Job responsibilities
  • Research Governance & Compliance
    • Ensure research projects comply with ICH-GCP, HRA, EU directives, Data Protection, and Trust standards.
    • Oversee approvals, contracts, feasibility, and capacity and capability confirmations.
    • Maintain/ develop SOPs, policies, and quality assurance systems.
    • Support audits, inspections, and regulatory submissions.
  • Study Support & Coordination
    • Provide functional support across the research lifecycle (feasibility, set-up, conduct, closure, archiving).
    • Ensure amendments and participant documents are processed correctly and on time.
    • Maintain accurate research and performance records (electronic and paper).
  • Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Liaise with investigators, clinical teams, sponsors, service departments, and the NW RRDN.
    • Promote research internally and externally.
    • Supporting with training and development within research.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • Relevant first degree or equivalent professional experience within a NHS research coordination setting
  • Evidence of continuing professional development within field relevant to role
  • Experience of supporting projects focusing on quality and improvement
  • Clinical research or project management qualification
  • GCP recognised recent training
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of the purpose, application and processes associated with clinical research, including appropriate research standards, frameworks and legislation
  • Understanding of the National Institute of Health Research and its national supporting structure for NHS Trusts
  • Knowledge of research specific quality systems
Experience
  • Experience of working in an NHS research and innovation environment
  • Experience of working in an advisory capacity
  • Experience of liaising with different professional groups and organisations at all levels
  • Experience of developing and implementing new processes/ procedures
  • Experience of delivering training to a range of audience
