Job summary

The University of Southampton invites applications for a Research Fellow to join an HFSP-funded project studying the evolutionary origins and diversification of sensory receptor and ion channel systems, focusing on TRP channels from non-bilaterian animals and choanoflagellates. You will apply molecular cloning, heterologous expression and pharmacological assays to characterise receptors and channels.

Working in the School of Biological Sciences, you will generate constructs, express proteins in

Qualifications

  • PhD (or near completion) in pharmacology, molecular biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, physiology, or evolutionary biology.
  • Experience in molecular biology, cloning and construct preparation.
  • Experience using heterologous expression systems; mammalian cell culture and functional assays.
  • Ability to analyse quantitative data, including concentration–response curves and EC50.
  • Interest in evolutionary biology and sensory neuroscience is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Characterise candidate TRP channels at molecular and functional levels.
  • Design and generate receptor and channel constructs; express in mammalian cells.
  • Develop and optimise functional assays and conduct high-throughput pharmacological screening.
  • Perform concentration–response experiments and data analysis to define pharmacological properties.
  • Collaborate with international partners and participate in project meetings.
