Overview

Post Title: Research Fellow on Signal Processing for Wireless Sensing and Communication

SBU/Department: School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science

FTE: 1 (working 37 hours per week)

Contract Type: Fixed-Term

Annual Leave: 35 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

Location: Hatfield, Hybrid

We are seeking a full-time Research Fellow for Signal Processing for Wireless Sensing and Communication to join the Communications and Intelligent Systems (CIS) Research Lab in the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire.

Working with Dr. Pan Cao, this role will contribute to the development of networks coordinated sensing and communication solutions and the proof of concepts for next-generation wireless communication, collaborating with other team members within the group, and external research institutes and industry partners within UK Federated Telecoms Hubs and beyond. We have hardware-based radar and communication systems for fresh data collection and real-life experiments, providing opportunities for hands-on, first-hand high-impact research.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Fellow will be responsible for developing and implementing innovative signal processing algorithms for radar sensing and communication, establishing clear research objectives, and engaging in the collaborative projects. In addition, the position involves disseminating research findings through high-impact publications and conference presentations. This is a research-focused position and no teaching duties are required.

Skills and experience required
  • Research expertise in signal processing, radar sensing and/or communication, such as waveform design, active/passive radar sensing algorithms design, interference mitigation.
  • Hands-on experience in demonstration development is a plus.
  • This Research Fellow role will create opportunities to maximise research activities, capturing relevant evidence to support impact and engaging with external partners and stakeholders.
Qualifications required

Candidates should have a PhD degree (or equivalent qualification), in electronics engineering, or closely related subjects (such as Computer Science, Maths, Engineering or Physics), and possess a strong track record in signal processing, wireless communication, radar sensing. Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, are essential.

This post is fixed-term until 31 March 2026 with possible extension.
