A postdoctoral position is available in the Plant-Microbe Interactions group of Dr Tomislav Cernava at the University of Southampton. The group focuses on deciphering plant-microbe interactions and identifying molecular mechanisms therein. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with expertise in targeted genetic manipulation of barley plants. The successful applicant will work in a dynamic, collaborative environment on increasing our understanding of fundamental plant-microbe interactions.

The selected candidate will be closely involved in the development and direction of this project, allowing them to bring in their expertise and further develop their skills in genetic manipulation of plants. Moreover, the work will allow them to obtain insights into state-of-the-art microbiome analysis techniques and the opportunity to expand their skills in bioinformatic analyses.

The project will focus on the identification of plant genes that can be linked to the host’s microbial community structure and function. Thereafter targeted manipulation using different molecular techniques will be implemented to mechanistically verify their capacity to modulate the microbiome as a whole. This will require development of targeted screening and validation assays, mostly based on chemical analytics and high-throughput sequencing.

The work will take place at the University’s Highfield campus campus, in Building 85, which was recently constructed (2008; £47M) to house Biological Sciences researchers and those who conduct multidisciplinary research in any aspect of life sciences. The School of Biological Sciences is equipped with high-end instrumentation as well as spacious greenhouse areas and growth chambers that will facilitate the implementation of the planned project. The location of Southampton makes it the perfect gateway to the south coast of England, offering access to city living and both the coast and countryside. The position includes 10 days of continuous Professional Development within the duties in support of the Researcher Concordat.

This post is suitable for plant scientists with a strong background in genetic manipulation of plants with state-of-the-art approaches.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.’

For additional information/informal enquiries before submitting your application, contact Dr Tomislav Cernava, T.Cernava@soton.ac.uk.

Please include a covering letter outlining your experience and reasons for applying for the role and a full CV in your application.
