About the role
We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position in law and technology, associated with a Leverhulme Trust Research Project on “Liability for Autonomous Decision Systems”. This role involves developing technical tools to diagnose machine learning (ML) decision quality, identify failures, and analyze root causes. The successful candidate will work with a team including Prof Carsten Gerner-Beuerle (UCL Laws), Prof Miguel Rodrigues (UCL Engineering), and a machine learning researcher. The position offers a vibrant research environment and collaboration opportunities across faculties. Appointment at Grade 7 requires a PhD; otherwise, initial appointment is at Grade 6B (£38,000 - £41,000), with backdating upon PhD completion. The role is initially for 12 months, with a possible extension of 6 months, subject to approval.
About you
We seek a motivated individual with a PhD in law, ideally at the intersection of law and technology, to contribute to developing regulatory frameworks for AI accountability. Candidates should have knowledge of tort, contract, product liability, internet law, digital regulation, and familiarity with AI regulatory initiatives. A publication record and conference participation are desirable, along with some knowledge of statistical, machine learning, or information theory.
