Job Description:

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position focused on the development of advanced control algorithms to promote energy efficiency and occupant comfort during vehicle operation, as well as on the modelling and simulation of electric vehicles and their components.

About the Role

The post is part of the High-Scape Horizon Europe project, which explores highly efficient power electronics components and systems, including integrated traction inverters, electric drives, and chassis actuators. The project involves industrial partners and universities across Europe, testing solutions on two full-size battery electric vehicle prototypes.

The successful candidate should have a strong background in experimental testing, programming (MATLAB/SIMULINK), and control, with a PhD in mechanical, automotive, or electrical/electronic engineering. Experience in the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Control development and implementation, including neural networks
  • Instrumentation and data-logging

Under the leadership of Dr. Davide Tavernini, Dr. Umberto Montanaro, and Prof. Patrick Gruber, you will be responsible for:

  1. Developing and implementing advanced control algorithms for electric powertrains and chassis actuators to enhance vehicle performance, energy management, and comfort;
  2. Supporting advanced simulations and modelling of electric powertrains to optimise efficiency and performance;
  3. Collaborating with experts in electrical/electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science;
  4. Participating in project meetings, presenting research findings, and contributing to reports and publications.

Join our dynamic and inclusive team at the Centre for Automotive Engineering within the School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences. We value diversity and aim to create a respectful, supportive environment.

The initial contract is for 15 months, with potential extensions based on performance, funding, and project needs.

The University of Surrey is committed to life-changing education and research, aiming to be among the world's top universities. We foster an empowering culture that enables individuals to make a meaningful impact.

How to Apply

Interviews are scheduled for 19th September. The university reserves the right to close the vacancy early depending on application volume and quality.
