Job Description:

Research Engineer (System Architecture)

Location: flexible in the UK, Bristol vicinity preferred.

Would you like to perform world-class research while also shaping products of the future? Are you interested in working with the most esteemed research partners across Europe?

Are you interested in questions like:

  • How can we best enable high performance AI software stacks on supercomputers?
  • How do we provide new environments/abstractions to support application developers to build, deploy, and run applications taking advantage of leading-edge hardware at scale?
  • How do we manage modern supercomputers in an environment with novel job and data separation requirements, or even secure computing requirements in a supercomputing environment?

The HPE HPC & AI EMEA Research Lab (ERL) is characterized by a unique blend of industrial research and tech development using Agile/Lean methodologies. Our Research Engineers are highly technical, team-thinking, communicative software/research engineers from a variety of backgrounds.

ERL is part of Hewlett Packard Labs, an international research organization with its headquarters and largest facility located in Milpitas, California. As the central research organization for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Hewlett Packard Labs' purpose is to deliver breakthrough technologies and technology advancements that provide a competitive advantage for the company, by investing in fundamental science and technology in areas of interest to HPE and getting the resulting technologies ready for adoption into new and existing markets.

We are:

  • A dedicated international research team integrated inside one of the most established global companies in HPC.
  • A group with varied expertise in many aspects of Computing, AI, and related disciplines.
  • A unique blend of the best of both worlds – quality research and development of real software.
  • Engaged in a variety of HPC-centric research projects, including Horizon Europe and Destination Earth.

We are looking for someone with the flexibility to work on both short- and longer-term research projects, aligned with the UK AI infrastructure Isambard-AI, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve project outcomes. You should be enthusiastic to learn new technologies and able to communicate what you have learned to others.

You should have:

  • Experience with system management stacks used in the management of reasonably large HPC systems, including identity and access management, system configuration, software deployment, high performance networks, and software container technology and monitoring.
  • Development experience classic compiled languages such as C, C++ or Fortran and experience with interpreted environments such as Python, and modern compiled languages like Go or Rust.
  • At least a B.Sc. equivalent in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematical discipline.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, as well as the data preparation, handling, and lineage control, as well as model deployment, in particular in a distributed environment.

Your personal skills include:

  • Strong team spirit but capable of independence.
  • Ability to represent oneself and the team both inside and outside the company.
  • A knack for finding fun in the complex and difficult.

You see great value in:

  • Team-based technical developments.
  • Communicating with a diverse set of people – the team, our partners, the rest of the company, customers, 3rd party developers.
  • Combining technical knowledge with bigger-picture thinking.

You might also have:

  • M.Sc. / Ph.D. in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematical discipline.
  • Experience with the Cray System Management software or OpenCHAMI
  • Experience in one or more domain specific software ecosystems (e.g. weather and climate, computational fluid dynamics, AI, data science).
  • Experience working on EU projects.
  • Experience working on HPC applications and/or Cloud applications.
  • Experience working with research consortia.

You will be integrated in the advanced collaboration center activities at the Isambard AI supercomputer, the premier UK AI supercomputing center in Bristol, focusing on advanced usage scenarios requiring site-specific system configuration, porting and optimization of workloads.

Further effort will go towards onboarding and supporting the scaling of novel domain-specific applications, convergence with AI and data-science, collaboration with the wider UK and European research community, and fostering collaboration with other large-scale HPE sites in EMEA.

You will also have the chance to spend time working with our team in other projects on topics suited to your interests and skillset, which may include subjects like data centric application coupling, secure computing, monitoring and operational data analytics, mathematical optimisation, containers, compilers, or application optimisation.
