Job Summary

Located within our £32m state-of-the-art Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol, this opportunity has arisen for a Research Engineer specializing in advanced automated composite manufacturing process development. You will be a key member of the GTC technology team, focusing on developing composite manufacturing processes for aircraft wing applications.

You will leverage your engineering knowledge across the product lifecycle to work on research tasks in the TRL3-6 range, executing planned tasks with a logical, methodical approach, and demonstrating adaptability and strong communication skills to engage with internal stakeholders.

The Programme

ASCEND is a cross-sector composite technology and supply chain development programme led by GKN Aerospace, involving 15 partners from aerospace and automotive sectors. It aims to develop technologies that enable high-rate production for civil aircraft and mobility markets through automation, design for manufacture, and skills development, while reducing costs and carbon footprint. The programme concludes in March 2025, targeting TRL5 and TRL6 achievements in composite manufacturing processes.

Job Responsibilities
  • Understand strategic product directions.
  • Manage work package or small work stream budgets.
  • Contribute to planning and funding proposals.
  • Develop technology plans and business cases.
  • Maintain accurate planning documentation.
  • Lead or support hands-on development and trials.
  • Record data and results meticulously.
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation.
  • Explore exploitation routes with guidance.
  • Support stakeholder management; lead supply chain management if needed.
  • Adhere to EH&S policies, fostering a proactive safety culture.
Job Qualifications

Candidates should have:

  • A degree in Engineering or equivalent (Aerospace/Mechanical/HND/Degree Apprenticeship).
  • Experience with automated composite handling, processing, programming equipment, Out-of-Autoclave processing, RTM, infusion, resin systems, AFP/ATL, material handling, layup, bagging, tooling, and cleaning.
  • Understanding of product lifecycle stages.
  • Experience with oven/autoclave programming, CAD tools (e.g., Catia V5), and composite post-processing techniques.
  • Knowledge of metrology, NDT, and composite design/manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with RTM, resin infusion, prepreg techniques; aerospace background preferred but not essential.
