Job description

The R&D Chemist will manage and execute complex resin‑focused projects, drawing on prior industry experience to independently plan experimental programmes, analyse results, and make data‑driven recommendations. They will collaborate closely with experienced R&D Engineers and Project Managers while supporting production, quality, and commercial teams.

Key Responsibilities

Contribute to and drive formulation, optimisation, and validation of epoxy‑based thermoset resin systems for prepregs and film adhesives.

Apply industrial experience in coatings, adhesives, composites, or thermosets to improve product robustness and processing performance.

Carry out project work from concept through to completion, following structured R&D methodologies.

Conduct laboratory studies including kinetic analysis, curing mechanisms, additive optimisation, and structure–property assessments.

Provide technical troubleshooting on resin performance, processing issues, and customer‑specific requirements.

Maintain awareness of new developments in polymer science, organic chemistry, and thermoset technologies relevant to SHD products.

Ensure all technical documentation — including formulations, processing guides, and test reports — is accurate, up to date, and aligned with user feedback.

Report experimental methods, findings, and recommendations to direct supervisors in a clear and timely manner.

Work closely with R&D Engineers and Project Managers to align formulation approaches with processing requirements and customer needs.

Supervise or guide R&D Technicians in laboratory tasks when required.

Liaise with Technical, Sales, Planning, and Purchasing departments to support cross‑functional project needs.

Work in accordance with SHD Quality and Health & Safety procedures.

Undertake any additional duties reasonably requested by the company.

Skills and Ability

PhD in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Materials Chemistry or a closely related discipline.

Several years of hands‑on industrial experience in thermosetting resin formulation (epoxy preferred).

Strong knowledge of reaction mechanisms, polymerisation chemistry, thermoset curing behaviour, and structure‑property relationships.

Experience with analytical and thermal techniques relevant to resins, polymers, and composites (e.g., rheology, DSC, DMA, spectroscopy, chromatography).

Ability to design, execute, and interpret complex experiments with a high degree of autonomy.

Strong attention to detail and proactive approach to laboratory work and problem‑solving.

High degree of computer literacy, including ability to analyse and interpret experimental data.

Good planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Strong communication skills for collaborating with cross‑functional internal teams (production, quality, commercial), and for interacting with suppliers and customers.

Ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple priorities.

Passion for materials science and enthusiasm for the development of cutting‑edge thermoset resin systems.

Client‑driven mindset with commitment to delivering high‑quality, scientifically sound results.

Friendly, flexible team player with a can‑do attitude and collaborative approach.

Proactive problem solver able to anticipate challenges and drive innovative solutions.
