An exciting opportunity to be involved at the cutting edge of life sciences innovation in east London. This role is for a talented Research Data Analyst to work on projects and applications that will develop and use AI and machine learning as the primary means of delivering innovative health care products and services including to enhance cancer disease detection, diagnosis and treatment as part of PharosAI at Barts Health. They will join a growing team which is focused on AI and reproducible applications of healthcare data to deliver innovative health care products and services to the front line. Barts Health has been awarded £4.3m as part of £18.9m in funding from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to support the PharosAI project by providing expertise in AI development and ensuring that data from the Barts Health Data Platform as well as Barts' local tissue bank informs the building of the new AI models. These datasets will allow commercial and academic researchers to interrogate, develop and validate AI algorithms for the benefit of people in North East London, the UK and beyond. The project touches both on artificial intelligence and clinical patient benefit.

Main duties of the job

Barts Life Sciences is our programme for using research, innovation and technologies to transform health and care services. This covers a broad range of activities from discovery science, product development and testing, and the application of new technology. Life sciences in Whitechapel is firmly based on the principles of partnership and collaboration, with patients, a large number of highly engaged primary care providers, a wide range of commercial and other academic partners, local government and the local community. These partnerships will be founded on a common ambition and desire to achieve profound health, economic and social benefit for the people of east London, the UK, and internationally.

As part of Barts Life Sciences, the postholder will have access to data and computation power, knowledge and innovation to lead the project’s development and genuinely impact patient care. We have a close network of clinical teams across the Trust, research groups at Queen Mary University of London and engaged patient groups to priorities and spread project outputs.

Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD in Data Science or a quantitative scientific discipline (eg mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, physics, computational biology, or a relevant discipline).
  • Experience in image processing

Experience

  • MSc/PhD in computer/data science, or similar field, with a strong data analysis component
  • Experience in image processing using machine learning and AI. In particular, we are looking for skillsets in some of the following: o Semantic/instance segmentation, o Multi object detection (and tracking), o Meta-learning, few-shot learning, o Generative models (such as GANs) o Transformer models
  • Excellent programming skills; demonstrable experience with Python
  • Interest or experience in working and interpreting clinical data (electronic health records (EHR), diagnostic imaging and pathology specimens
  • Evidence of on-going self-motivated research activity at a high level
  • Demonstrable experience of problem solving, project design and identifying the relevant resources required
  • Strong background through achievement in the study of health data science, or computational biology, or genetics and genomics
  • Knowledge of visualisation techniques for understanding large or complex data
  • Knowledge of appropriate procedures for information governance
  • Experience in natural language processing, information mining and text mining
  • Experience working in a UNIX/Linux environment
  • Experience in one or more data management tools (SQL, etc.)
  • Knowledge of data tools for cancer detection using diagnostic imaging and pathology specimens

Knowledge

  • Demonstrable experience in health data science
  • Knowledge of management procedures
  • Understanding of digital health innovations

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a great telephone manner
  • Able to work and communicate effectively with Senior staff, senior Consultants and other senior Executive/Non-executive staff within and outside the NHS.
  • Ability to rapidly develop strong working relationships and gain the confidence of others
  • Ability to play a collaborative role in applying for grant funding for research as appropriate to discipline
  • Presentation of specialist material in a logical, coherent and interesting manner to a range of audiences
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Willingness to work flexibly in order to achieve project demands
