Job Description

Job Purpose

To make a leading contribution to the EPSRC project “Silicon core fibres: extending the reach of nonlinear fibre systems,” working with the XtremeLight group led by Dr. Maria Chiara Braidotti, Prof. Daniele Faccio, and Dr. Ashley Lyons. The position will involve close collaboration with our academic partner, Professor Anna Peacock, in the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton, focusing on using Silicon core fibers for imaging with undetected photons.

The project aims to develop a new platform for quantum light generation, crucial for quantum technologies such as quantum information, sensing, and spectroscopy. It includes opportunities like generating and characterizing Telecom band photon pairs, photon pairs beyond 2 μm, and creating macroscopic quantum states of light, including squeezed light for enhanced detection and imaging. This project intends to significantly advance quantum optics, metrology, and sensing technologies.

The successful candidate will also contribute to research publications, proposals, and help manage this complex project.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Lead planning and conduct of research activities aligned with project goals and strategies.
  • Document research outputs, analyze data, maintain records, and draft reports and papers.
  • Build and maintain a research profile and reputation through publications and impact activities.
  • Review literature, understand research challenges, and develop strategies to address them.
  • Present research at conferences, seminars, and workshops.
  • Identify funding opportunities and assist in proposal development.
  • Develop collaborations with academic and industrial partners.
  • Participate in research group activities and contribute to the research culture.
  • Supervise and mentor students and junior team members.
  • Manage administrative tasks, including budgets and expenditure.
  • Contribute to teaching activities as assigned.
  • Stay updated with advances in the field.
  • Engage in personal and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Contribute to the university’s international profile.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills And Experience

  • PhD or equivalent in Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science, with a track record of independence.
  • Knowledge of quantum optics, single photon detection, fiber optics, squeezed light, and quantum states.
  • Proficiency with research methods, equipment, and software like Matlab, LabView, or Python.

Skills

  • Excellent experimental skills in femtosecond lasers, quantum optics, and imaging.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Organizational skills for managing research activities.
  • IT and data analysis skills, including automation of lab equipment.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills.

Desirable

  • Ability to develop expertise across multiple fields.

Experience

  • Experience in planning research activities and securing funding.
  • Research outputs that enhance the institution's profile.
  • Experience in research supervision and supporting colleagues.
  • Background in optics experiments, quantum imaging, or nonlinear optics.

Closing date: 6 August 2025
