An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented researcher to join the Green Algorithms Initiative in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge. This role focuses on understanding and mitigating the environmental impacts of scientific computing.
You will lead projects to improve how computing environmental impacts are estimated and reported, explore the impact of scientific fields like genome sequencing and AI, and integrate life-cycle analyses to expand impact assessments beyond carbon footprints, including quantifying uncertainty.
The research aims to make computing more sustainable by enhancing impact reporting and understanding the carbon footprint of specific scientific areas. You will receive training in green computing and sustainability, with the goal of publishing high-impact research.
The Green Algorithms Initiative, led by Dr. Loïc Lannelongue, develops open-source tools for sustainable computational science, including the Green Algorithms online calculator and monitoring tools. The initiative has received awards for its contributions, such as the HDR-UK Impact Award.
You will collaborate with senior scientists and other departments, including the Department of Computer Science and Technology.
Candidates should have an MSc or PhD (or equivalent) in computer science, bioinformatics, sustainability, or related fields, with an interest in computing and environmental sustainability. Excellent communication, organizational skills, and the ability to present results are essential.
Appointment at the Research Associate level requires a PhD (or equivalent), including those who have submitted but not yet received it. If the PhD is pending, the appointment will start as a Research Assistant and be upgraded once awarded, within 6 months. Candidates without a PhD but with relevant degrees or experience may be considered for a Research Assistant role.
The funding is available for 2 years initially, with flexible working options of at least 60% FTE.
