The role spans epidemiology, modelling and fieldwork focused on African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) with partners across the UK and Tanzania, delivering evidence-based strategies for sustainable disease control.

You will analyse field data, help develop models, coordinate field studies in Tanzania and work with

Responsibilities

  • Undertake epidemiological and statistical analyses of field data.
  • Develop and parameterise mathematical and agent-based models of AAT transmission and drug resistance.
  • Coordinate epidemiological field studies in Tanzania, including study design and data management.
  • Collaborate with laboratory scientists and international partners to translate empirical data into robust models and practical disease-control recommendations.

Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate to join the School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine (University of Glasgow) to make a leading contribution to the BBSRC-funded Strategies and Tools to Prevent Trypanocide Failure (STOP-Tryp) project.

Working with Profs Louise Matthews and Harriet Auty and an interdisciplinary team across the University of Glasgow, the Roslin Institute, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and partners in Tanzania, the post holder will contribute to the development of evidence-based strategies for the sustainable control of African animal trypanosomosis (AAT).

The role combines quantitative epidemiology, mathematical modelling and field epidemiology. The post holder will undertake epidemiological and statistical analyses of field data, contribute to the development and parameterisation of mathematical and agent-based models of AAT transmission and drug resistance, and help coordinate epidemiological field studies in Tanzania. This will include supporting study design, data management and integration, fieldwork logistics, and close collaboration with laboratory scientists and international partners to ensure that empirical data are translated into robust models and practical disease‑control recommendations.

The overall aim of the project is to identify sustainable combinations of chemotherapy and vector control that minimise treatment failure and drug resistance while improving livestock health and productivity. The post holder will play a key role in integrating epidemiological evidence with modelling outputs to generate practical guidance for farmers, veterinary services and policymakers.
