Job Description:

The post is part of the World Weather Attribution (WWA) initiative, funded by the Bezos Earth Fund, aiming to scientifically analyze the link between human-induced climate change and extreme weather events. WWA focuses on developing regionally appropriate methodologies to assess wildfires, which are complex events influenced by multiple variables and currently challenging for rapid attribution.

Since its inception, the Climate and Environment Policy (CEP) has conducted policy-focused research to address environmental and sustainability issues. Based at CEP, WWA is a collaboration between climate scientists at Imperial College London, KNMI in the Netherlands, the Red Cross / Red Crescent Climate Centre (RCCC), and a global network of scientists. Led by Dr. Fredi Otto, WWA provides rapid assessments of climate change's role in extreme weather events, aiming to improve understanding of climate impacts today. In this role, you will work with the WWA team on attribution and methodological studies related to wildfires and other extreme events, engaging with stakeholders from various sectors, including legal, media, and others.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  1. Applying, developing, and implementing methods for attribution analyses of extreme events, focusing on wildfires.
  2. Leading and participating in scientific activities within the WWA team.
  3. Contributing to the scientific development of risk assessment related to extreme weather.
  4. Exploring opportunities for research on climate uncertainties, risk assessment, and attribution of extreme events.
  5. Engaging with stakeholders and researchers within Imperial College and the broader community, including the financial sector.

You will have opportunities to disseminate your work through conferences and journal publications.

Minimum requirements:

  • Hold a PhD in atmospheric or climate science or a closely related discipline.
  • Knowledge of and publication record on wildfires.
  • Practical research experience and/or publication in refereed journals.
  • Ability to organize work independently.
  • Opportunity to advance your career at a leading institution and contribute to impactful science.
  • Access to Imperial’s sector-leading resources, with prospects for promotion and professional growth.
  • Competitive salary and benefits, including 39 days off per year and generous pension schemes.
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment with resources to support your personal and professional development.
