Job summary

The University of Manchester invites applications for a research position in the condensed matter physics group within the Department of Physics & Astronomy. The post will study catalytic and ion transport properties of new 2D materials, with projects funded by EPSRC, EC, and other funders.

Start date 1 October for 24 months. We seek a PhD holder in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field with experience in electrochemistry, clean-room device fabrication or precision electrical

Qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline, or evidence that the PhD thesis has been submitted before taking up the role.
  • Understanding of electrochemistry, materials science, condensed matter physics, chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Ability to analyse experimental data and develop scientific interpretations.
  • Ability to communicate research findings clearly through written and oral communication.
  • Experience conducting experimental research in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field.

  • Developing new approaches to control catalytic and ion-transport processes in two-dimensional crystal–ionic interfaces
  • Designing and performing electrochemical experiments to investigate interfacial charge transfer and chemical reactivity
  • Fabricating and characterising nanoscale devices based on emerging two-dimensional materials
  • Applying precision electrical measurements to understand the relationship between electric fields, charge transport, and chemical processes
  • Collaborating with researchers across physics, chemistry, and materials science to advance project goals

Job description

Applications are invited for a research position within the condensed matter physics group in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Manchester. The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of researchers who have been at the forefront of graphene research since its discovery in 2004 and will work on a series of projects relating to graphene and other 2D materials funded by the EPSRC, European Commission and a range of other international funders.

The post is available from 1 October for a period of 24 months. The project will focus on the investigation of the catalytic and ion transport properties of new 2D materials. The successful candidate should have already submitted their PhD dissertation in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or related discipline. Specialist experience in electrochemistry, device micro-fabrication in clean room environment or precision electrical measurements would be considerable advantage. The candidate should also be well-organised and self-motivated, with excellent communication skills.

You will be responsible for:

  • Experience with one or more relevant techniques, such as electrochemical measurements, electrical characterisation, microscopy, spectroscopy, or nanoscale device fabrication
  • Ability to work independently, plan research activities, and take ownership of scientific projects
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new techniques
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of research quality, integrity, and safety
