Full time, 35 hours per week

Fixed term contract until June 2026

The Opportunity:

This Research Associate position will contribute to the CoTide: “Co-design to deliver Scalable Tidal Stream Energy” project while based within the Institute for Infrastructure and the Environment at the University of Edinburgh. The project is funded by EPSRC and involves collaboration with colleagues at the Universities of Oxford, Edinburgh, and Strathclyde. The team of around 35 researchers and academics will develop comprehensive models covering all aspects of tidal stream turbine design, from hydrodynamics to reliability. This role focuses on the interactions of tidal stream turbine devices with the environment, specifically addressing key research challenges related to tidal stream Metocean, Environment, and Ecology aspects, to inform the co-design process of tidal devices across operational conditions.

This role is classified as UE07 and is initially available on a fixed-term basis until June 2026, with the possibility of extension depending on funding. A detailed list of responsibilities and required skills can be found in the full job description below.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A PhD in Engineering or a closely related field, with a focus on Computational Science.
  • Research experience in coastal ocean hydrodynamics, numerical modelling, or related areas.
  • Experience in computational modelling (e.g., Finite Element or Finite Volume methods) development and application.
  • Ability to develop, communicate, and present research ideas effectively to scientific audiences.
